Hearing the laughs of kookaburras and the “sounds of all different birds” while hiking in southern recreation parks has been a surprising – and joyful – highlight of Physiotherapy sessions for Minda ASSIST Therapy client Corey.
Corey has been undergoing Physiotherapy sessions with Lead Clinician (Physiotherapy) Alister Morton for two-and-a-half years.
Alister says Corey has achieved significant improvement in strength, balance and mobility through hydrotherapy sessions at Minda Brighton, as well as land-based therapy which has included community sessions at shopping centres and parks.
“Corey has conquered the Sugar Loaf track at Hallett Cove which covers more than 300 steps and rough undulating ground, and is no mean feat for someone who relies on his cane and guidance to negotiate his path,” Alister says.
“His most recent goal was conquering Shepherd’s Hill (pictured below). His only complaint is that he is losing weight and sometimes needs to re-adjust his trousers now! Corey also enjoys speaking with others, listening and guessing what is around him and, in the recent walk, listening to kookaburras which he hadn’t heard in a long while.”
Corey says hearing the kookaburras is his favourite thing about hiking, which he has discovered a real passion for and wants to do as often as possible. He has already been out to the Sugar Loaf track a second time.
“I’ve also gone to the shopping centres at Marion and Colonnades with Alister to do therapy on the stairs there,” he says.
Physiotherapy has helped Corey to have better endurance during his work day, as he works five days a week in Packaging at Commercial Enterprises at Reynella.
“I work on packing the dog treats (for Bow Wow), that’s my favourite part, as well as the good people I work with,” Corey says.
Physiotherapy has helped many clients like Corey with coordination, activity and function, with Alister and the Physiotherapy team enjoying helping people to achieve the goals they set in their NDIS plans. Minda ASSIST Therapy can be contacted on (08) 8126 2400.
