When Rebecca* and her mother came across a brochure featuring a familiar face—her friend holding a chicken at MyPath—it sparked their interest in exploring new post-school opportunities.

As they learnt more about the MyPathway to Day Options program, it became evident that the initiative could provide Rebecca with the support and skills needed to thrive in adulthood.

Designed for high school leavers, the initiative offers a 20-week introduction to the regular MyPath Day Options program, featuring a range of skill-based workshops.

Rebecca is one of 11 participants who have transitioned to adult-focused programs since 2023 and has quickly developed the skills, friendships and confidence needed to live her best life.

She currently attends MyPath one day per week, with staff thoughtfully planning a schedule that allows her to fit a wide range of activities into a single day.

Disability support worker Tommy Lu has worked closely with Rebecca* since she transitioned into adult-focused programs last year and has seen steady personal progression through various experiences.

Typically, the pottery program at MyPath is used as the starting and ending point for Rebecca’s day, with the hours in between spent participating in numerous activities or accessing the community.

Whether it is showcasing her artistic talents through painting, creativity in the kitchen or completing activities in the ICT suite, Rebecca enjoys the variability that each week provides.

The engaging schedule also includes social outings based around Rebecca’s passions, such as visiting the zoo to view all the incredible animals.

“Rebecca enjoys the variability that each week provides. Since transitioning into MyPath, I have seen her develop new skills and make meaningful friendships with her peers,” Tommy said.

“We understand that progress is never linear, but it is our job, as staff, to provide support to allow people like Rebecca to achieve their life goals and follow their passions."

Consistent communication with Rebecca’s family provides an opportunity to understand her enjoyment level and discuss the skills she has developed over the course of the day.

Rebecca’s mother said the helpful staff at MyPath have played a key role in creating a positive environment where her daughter can flourish and reach her full potential.

“The staff have built a trusting relationship with Rebecca. They truly understand her—what she enjoys and what she doesn’t—which makes a difference in her day-to-day experience,” she said.

“They’ve created a space where Rebecca feels supported and comfortable. She’s made meaningful friendships and continues to grow thanks to the opportunities at MyPath.”

Rebecca’s journey all began by chance—when her family happened to come across a MyPathway to Day Options program brochure that sparked their curiosity.

“We stumbled across a brochure for the program, which had a little blurb and, funnily enough, a photo of a girl Rebecca used to go to school with,” Rebecca's mother said.

“I showed it to Rebecca and asked if she wanted to check it out—especially since her friend was already part of it. Rebecca has a deep love for animals, so I reckon the chicken was the selling point.

“We decided to pop in for one of the come-and-try days, and the rest is history.”

While life after school can often be a daunting time for many families, Rebecca's mother said discovering the MyPathway to Day Options program has made the leap to adulthood easier.

“What made the transition so smooth and seamless was that she’s still supported by the same staff she built familiarity and trust with through the MyPathway to Day Options program,” she said.

“Rebecca loves the community feel at MyPath, and we’re confident she’ll continue to grow into the future.”

With the foundation she’s built and the ongoing support from her family and support staff, Rebecca is on her way to achieving her goals and living her best life.
