Supported Independent Living (SIL) client Ryan doesn’t just appreciate the arts – he lives and breathes them.
From fine-tuning his drawing and painting skills to strumming his guitar and dabbling in theatre, Ryan’s passion for creativity is undeniable.
With a string of accomplishments already under his belt, Ryan has his sights set on achieving even more in the artistic space. That passion first ignited when he was a young boy, initially taking shape through drawing.
“I am an alternative expressionist, which means creating art that sits outside of the mainstream. I like to express my emotions and feelings through my art – whether that’s through painting, music, or any other medium,” Ryan said.
Ryan’s early love for the arts continued to grow, eventually leading him to study a degree in the arts at Flinders University. He’s now in the final year of his three-year course. With graduation on the horizon, Ryan said he is excited for the milestone and the sense of pride it will bring.
During his studies, he’s explored everything from drawing and design fundamentals to painting, film production, and creative writing processes.
Ryan’s interest in the stage saw him get involved in No Strings Attached – a theatre company that provides opportunities to performers living with disability.
One of his proudest achievements was his role in Sons & Mothers, which premiered to a sold-out season at the 2012 Adelaide Fringe and won three coveted Fringe Awards, including Best Theatre Production and Best in Fringe.
A feature film documenting the creative process behind the play was produced in 2013 as part of the Adelaide Film Festival.
“Being involved in the multi-award-winning play, which was turned into a feature film and toured across the country, has been one of my favourite life experiences.”

“Performing in front of crowds around Australia during the three-month tour was so much fun. I formed strong friendships, pursued my passion, and even met some famous people.”
One of those celebrities was Australian comedy legend Frank Woodley, who Ryan met during a performance in Darwin.
Ryan also has a deep love for music, especially playing guitar. He draws inspiration from his favourite heavy rock and metal bands, including Metallica, Slayer, Guns N’ Roses and Slipknot.
A shared trait between Ryan and his rock idols is his instrument of choice – a genuine B.C. Rich Warlock guitar. The design of the instrument matches the eccentricity of the era and is prized possession for the 42-year-old.
“It was such a unique brand in the 1980s, and it’s rare to have a genuine one because there are so many replicas around. I got mine when I was 19 and have played it ever since," Ryan said.

Ryan has lived in his Blackwood-based SIL accommodation since 2013 and currently shares the house with two other gentlemen. He enjoys their company and appreciates the area’s scenic beauty – especially the tranquility of nearby Sturt Gorge Recreation Park.
“The remoteness of the area is quite meditative and peaceful. Going for walks helps clear my mind and gets my creative juices flowing.”
When he’s not studying, Ryan stays connected with his family and catches up with a friend regularly to create music – something he really enjoys.
He said the support from staff has also been instrumental in facilitating new opportunities, including travel. Last year, he visited the Gold Coast, with staff helping arrange transport to and from the airport and various other details of the trip.
Disability Support Worker Joanne Suttle, who works at the Blackwood-based home, said Ryan is a pleasure to support and describes him as thoughtful, creative, and curious about the world around him.
She said the team works hard to ensure Ryan has the freedom and encouragement to pursue his passions. “Our staff are proactive in supporting Ryan to do what he loves,” Joanne said.
According to Joanne, Ryan’s support staff are deeply invested in his journey and work collaboratively to help him reach his goals.
“Everyone on his regular support team is genuinely involved and always advocating for Ryan to have every opportunity to keep building on his talents and interests. We work closely with him to make sure he doesn’t miss out on anything that matters to him,” Joanne said.
“His creativity and drive are a huge part of who he is, and we’re proud to be part of his journey.”
With his unwavering creativity and the continued support of his dedicated house staff, Ryan is excited to keep exploring new artistic opportunities – wherever inspiration leads him next.
