Minda has received a Highly Commended award in the Environmental category at this year's Brighton Jetty Sculptures exhibition for its sculptures, titled ‘Metamorphosis’. Impressively, it is the second year in a row that Minda has been honoured with this award.
The inspiration for this year's entry came from Minda's connection with the vibrant ecosystem surrounding the Brighton neighbourhood. Clients from two MyPath programs collaborated to create two sculptures that reference the nearby ocean in an environmentally friendly way.
Suzanne Sloan, from MyPath’s Visual Arts program, said each sculpture weighs over 30 kilograms and features dozens of detailed creations from clients that attend the Visual Arts and Pottery programs.
The interior of the creative sculpture is made primarily from recycled materials, such as old go-kart tires, pot plants, wire and broken mirrors, while the eye-catching exterior is covered with sea-related ceramic “barnacles” designed by the Pottery program's on-site pottery studio/kiln.
Regardless of experience or physical limitations, each sculpture celebrates the individuality and creativity of the clients who have worked together to make the project a reality.
“People who view the sculptures will notice objects of varying sizes and levels of detail. This project provided an opportunity for clients of all skill levels to collaborate and create something truly eye-catching and amazing,” Suzanne said.
“After months of hard work and collaboration, the sculptures are a proud reflection of the incredible effort and creativity the two programs have invested.”
Suzanne encouraged people to attend the Brighton Jetty Sculptures exhibition, located near the Brighton Surf Life Saving Club, to see both sculptures for themselves.
The Brighton Jetty Sculptures exhibition will run from 22 January until 2 February 2025. To learn more about the exhibition, please click here.
