Making a giant leap into the unknown can often be scary, but this can be made easier by having the right support network.
For client Charlie, even the thought of leaving the car to attend MyPath seemed like a mountain to climb. However, through personalised support, Charlie has shown some immense personal growth.
Prior to joining Minda, even finding the motivation to leave his room was difficult for Charlie, with social situations being something he would often avoid.
After mustering the courage to walk through the doors of MyPath, Charlie started getting involved in the ICT program in the comfort of a sensory room.
With the support of Minda staff, as well as an external mentor, Charlie was able to develop basic computer skills, as well as play games on the device.
Becoming comfortable in his surroundings was a slow but necessary process, providing the platform for future integration with the rest of the ICT program.
“It was a slow process, but Charlie eventually got to a position where he could move into the main group to engage with other clients,” disability support worker Tylor Hamnett said.
“There were moments where he had to go back to his own space, but being able to join the main group was a massive achievement for Charlie, considering where he started from.”
By taking the necessary small steps and providing added staff support, Charlie was able to develop at his own pace and feel comfortable in his surroundings.
Charlie’s involvement in the ICT program has allowed him to improve his social skills immensely, resulting in him having the confidence to visit busy social settings.
“One of Charlie’s biggest personal achievements was when the ICT program travelled to Adelaide Central Market to get some photos developed,” Tylor said.
“The trip involved catching public transport, which can sometimes be overwhelming. Charlie went from not wanting to leave his room to catching public transport and being in spaces full of people.”
Overcoming an initial fear has allowed Charlie to improve his social skills and develop a newfound confidence that has seen him participate in other engaging activities.
After finding it difficult to complete one day per week at MyPath, Charlie now participates three days per week, picking up additional programs, such as swimming.
Lifestyle Precinct Two (LSP2) Team Leader Jack Meinel said observing Charlie’s social development has been inspiring.
“Seeing how Charlie has grown socially has been great – he attended the Animals Anonymous client event and even had the confidence to hold a snake, as well as other animals,” Jack said.
“Outside of MyPath, Charlie now uses public transport regularly and even attends the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre – we were unsure whether Charlie would get to this position.”
While walking to INC Café to grab lunch or playing basketball seems like an easy everyday task for many, it has taken months of persistence and support to get Charlie to this position.
Sometimes taking the first step is the hardest, but for Charlie it has been the most rewarding. With a newfound confidence, Charlie is ready to continue his journey and live his best possible life.
