Since Maureen first dipped her toe in the soothing and heated waters of the Minda Aquatic Centre 12 years ago, she hasn’t looked back.

It all started when Maureen faced a back injury which resulted in six months of rest before starting physio and rehabilitation.

“Once I was given the green light to start rehab, I started at Griffiths Rehabilitation Hospital, but only a short amount was covered by private health. I was recommended to either go to the Repat or Minda to continue my exercises, so I chose Minda and I’ve been going ever since - it’s so welcoming and wonderful,” Maureen said.

The all-purpose built Aquatic Centre at Minda's North Brighton community is open to both allied health professionals and the general public for rehab, therapy sessions or just casual swimming.

The hydrotherapy pool is one of only a few in the state containing many special features to help facilitate rehabilitation.

“There have been so many benefits for me being part of the aquatic community at Minda. There is that physical aspect - it strengthens your muscles and keeps you going physically – but then there is that social interaction aspect where it gets me out of the house and getting to know people and forming friendships. It really has a community feel, which I’m so grateful for.”

Minda supplies a wide range of specialised equipment and qualified lifeguards patrol the area.

What initially began as a form of physical exercise in her recovery has blossomed into lasting friendships for Maureen, who attends the aquatic centre three days a week.

“I was going to the morning group for about five years and made some lovely friends who still keep in contact with me. I’ve now been part of the afternoon group for about seven years, and we meet up at the Inc Café for lunch or a coffee after our swim. They are a lovely bunch of ladies,” she said.

During her 45-minute session, Maureen participates in a mix of aqua aerobics and other aquatic exercises with a group that can range from 18 to 24 participants.
