Choosing a career pathway to pursue is often influenced by the passions and interests that a person develops over the course of their life and is honed by job-specific education.

Helping those in need has always brought a sense of pride to Riverland-based student Morgan, who is currently studying a Certificate III in Individual Support at the SA Learning Centre (SALC).

After successfully competing in the WorldSkills regional competition last year, Morgan is currently preparing for National Championships in Brisbane, which will take place from June 12-14.

She will represent South Australia as the only student from the state competing in the healthcare category—a great achievement in Australia’s largest vocational education and skills competition.

Each year, the competition brings together top regional competitors to showcase their talents in a variety of industries, and Morgan is eager to test her skills on the national stage.

With the event fast approaching, she is excited to represent her home state and challenge herself against her interstate peers.

“I am excited to compete nationally to better my skills and represent South Australia. It's not just about winning; it’s about learning and growing,” Morgan said.

In preparation for next week’s national championships, Morgan has received support from SALC, the Department for Education, and the Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network.

This support has come in the form of mentoring and gaining hands-on experience in both hospital and aged care settings. This exposure has been key in honing the skills required for her future career.

Regardless of the outcome, Morgan views this great opportunity as another step toward building a fulfilling career once she completes Year 12.

"I’ve learned so much already, and I know this experience will help me build a strong foundation for my future," she said.

Morgan’s journey since enrolling in the Certificate III in Individual Support at the SA Learning Centre has been positive. It has allowed her to fine tune her career pathway.

What started as a desire to work in aged care has evolved into a clear aspiration to pursue a career in Registered Nursing.

“I’ve been taught a lot of new and helpful information throughout the course,” she said.

“The teaching methods at SALC have been interactive and engaging, which makes learning enjoyable and effective.”

While many students feel pressure from others to follow a specific career path, Morgan is fortunate to have a family that supports her journey and encourages her to pursue what makes her happiest.

“My family has been extremely supportive of my career goals. They want me to follow a path that brings me happiness, and that’s all I could ask for,” she said.

As Morgan works towards completing her Certificate III, she’s said she would recommend SALC to others who may be interested in following a similar career path.

“I would absolutely recommend exploring the training available at SALC,” she said.

“The educators have been so helpful and understanding. The skills I’ve gained will stay with me for life, and I feel prepared to enter the workforce with confidence.”

The SA Learning Centre continues to provide nationally accredited courses to over 200 students each year, offering practical, hands-on training in fields such as Disability, Aged Care, and Horticulture.

The RTO’s commitment to job-ready training ensures that students like Morgan are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in their chosen careers.
