Maria’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and continuous growth—a journey full of sporting achievements, friendships, and engaging hobbies.
Last year, Maria had the honour of taking an active role in the Special Olympics SA State Games Opening Ceremony at Netball SA Stadium.
The event, which included a parade, a torch-lighting ceremony, and various engaging activities, also gave Maria the opportunity to reflect on her swimming and bowling accomplishments.
Her sporting career took her far and wide, including a trip to the United States, where she earned silver and bronze medals for her bowling talents. While she might not be travelling the world anymore, she still enjoys bowling once per week.
Maria’s participation in last year's ceremony was made possible thanks to her disability support worker, Kirsty Bassham, whose unwavering support ensured she could take part in the event.
“It was great being part of the ceremony – the atmosphere was fantastic. Being able to play the sports I love was a wonderful experience and gave me plenty of memories that I still think about,” Maria said.
Both sports have not only provided Maria with plenty of success but also a sense of belonging within a community of like-minded athletes. That same sense of belonging and friendship continues at MyPath, where she participates in the Cottage Craft program.
“MyPath has allowed me to develop skills that interest me, as well as build friendships with others in the Cottage Craft program,” Maria said.
Maria enjoys “keeping busy” in Cottage Craft and seeing familiar faces that bring a smile to her face. MyPath isn't the only place where she enjoys trying something new. For the first time, Maria has started her own garden at home.
“I have never done it before but I look forward to learning. I enjoy going outside and planting vegetables and flowers - I find it relaxing,” she said.
Tomatoes, basil, and a variety of plants are among the things she hopes to grow, with the new endeavour already bringing her joy and a sense of accomplishment.
After a lifetime of fulfilling experiences, Maria has proven that it’s never too late to try something new—and that passion never fades.
