Two Brighton Secondary School students have recently completed their Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) through the SA Learning Centre (SALC), gaining their Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability) and enjoying their 120-hour placement at Minda.
Both Isabelle, who is in Year 11, and Maddi, who is in Year 12, say they have had a fantastic experience completing their placement with Retirement Lifestyle Services (RLS) in the Chuanginga building at Minda Brighton, under the guidance of support leader Jen Warncken.
“Undertaking VETiS at SALC and placement at RLS has opened pathways to a lot of career opportunities and given me the confidence to work with people,” says Isabelle, who ultimately hopes to become a nurse.
Maddi says she was keen to do something outside the traditional Year 12 academic pathway.
“Doing the Certificate III in Individual Support through VETiS at SALC has really opened my eyes to what the disability industry is about, and I’ve realised it’s a really rewarding industry,” Maddi says.
“I will definitely consider this as a career, and I’d actually really love to work in this building (Chuaninga).”
Maddi spent 12 weeks completing her 120-hour placement in Chuaninga and says the biggest highlight has been the strong bonds she has formed with customers and staff from RLS.
“It’s going to be sad when I leave,” she says.
“But one chapter closes and another will open … I’ll definitely look to apply to work here at Minda. Everyone says how good I am with the customers and I just love it.”
Jen Warncken says having Maddi and Isabelle on placement in RLS was a ‘pleasure’.
“They do a great job,” Jen says.
“Both Maddi and Isabelle have brought extra skills to teach the guys here, and our guys have really enjoyed interacting with the students.”
VETiS programs are undertaken by school students as part of the senior secondary certificate and provide credit towards a nationally recognised VET qualification within the Australian Qualifications Framework.
