Michael worked for the Victorian Department of Education for 47 years as a teacher and principal in small country schools, city schools, and special schools including Ballarat Special School and Ewing House School for the Deaf.

As a school principal from 1999 to his retirement in 2014, he was responsible for school governance to both his local school community and the Victorian government. His community involvement included being president of early intervention organisation Playhouse in Ballarat.

Since moving to Adelaide in 2015, Michael and his wife have a daughter who is supported by Minda, and they both enjoy being active volunteers across the organisation.

Outside of Minda, Michael volunteers as a bus driver for the Holdfast Bay Community Centre, and is a member of the Brownhill Creek Rotary Club.
